Celebrating 10 Years!

On the 2 January 2015, I sat in my newly furnished office overlooking Ventnor Bay, with an amazing sea view. It was the first day of the ‘launching’ of my new one year project to run my own business and provide some behind the scenes admin and executive support.

The office was equipped in Ikea white furniture and decor - as far removed from the corporate traditional office that I could get. I had spent the two previous months putting together the IT stuff and creating a website - things way beyond my skill level and a challenge but given I’d recently ‘retired’ I found it a fun part of the project.

So, everything was ready for that 2 January - I think it was a Friday. I sat smugly at my desk and waited for clients to come through the door.

Of course, they didn’t just turn up and I spent many an hour gazing out of the window at my spectacular view. But, reality kicked in and I realised I would need to work hard to get people to know I was there and what I could do. I only ever advertised with the little local paper in Ventnor and then work started to come through via word of mouth. Joining the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce turned out to be a turning point for me as I went to networking events which in turn created a wealth of new friendships and future contacts.

Surprisingly, given my lack of expertise in creating a website and trying to ensure people could find me, a significant amount of work has been generated through that website. Who would know!!

So, ten years on and I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved from my one year project. I’ve learnt so much along the way, had days when I’ve been overwhelmed with work and others when I’ve twiddled my thumbs, but that’s the way of running a business.

As I head into 2025, (with a broken arm!😂), I look forward to what this year brings. After ten years, I can now focus on the work I really enjoy. The most important thing for me now is, I guess, what all business owners strive for in the end, and that’s to be my own boss, make my own choices, go on holiday when I want to. 🏝️😎
